How do Biofeedback and Mindfulness Therapies Work?
Biofeedback is an evidence-based therapy where you are taught to self-regulate your nervous system allowing for new psycho-physiological connections. It is real time training where you are connected to physiological sensors showing the change of your respiration rate, heart rate, skin conductance, temperature and heart rate variability to different thoughts, feelings, emotions, postures, and breath. With biofeedback training, breath retraining, mindfulness therapies, postural awareness, and cognitive reframing, you learn to move through different nervous system states with more ease, psychological flexibility, and resilience. In general, biofeedback strengthens vagal tone, increases optimal performance, and reduces stress.
Biofeedback training is a collaborative process. Together we set up goals, assess strategies, and home practices. Because the first part of the process is self-awareness, I will ask you to monitor your sensations, moods/emotions, thought patterns and behaviours. As this is a training session, I will then ask you to practice what you have learned between sessions. This home practice is important in rewiring the nervous system and creating new habits. Like all skills, the more you practice the more effective training will be. The last step is incorporating these new skills in your everyday.
Sessions include:
Biofeedback Training
Breath work and Breath Retraining
Mindfulness Therapies and Progressive Relaxation
Therapeutic Exercises and Postural/Movement Awareness
Cognitive Reframing
